About Us

Pottstown Karate Club

  In 1993 Pottstown Karate Club (PKC)  originated  as Robert Matthews Karate Do. Throughout the past decade and beyond, we have maintained our commitment to traditional Shotokan Karate.

It has been our experience that individuals who choose to train in the martial arts are looking for more than just a workout, they are looking for an training experience.

We offer no Secret Techniques, no Mystical Art, no Superhuman Abilities. Instead we offer the benefits that come from hard work and consistent training;

Hard work enhances ability, Humility develops character, Structure produces discipline, and focus inspires intellect.

At PKC Attendance and donations do not guarantee rank advancement. However, commitment to training, learning to challenge yourself, and the desire to want to be better will produce the advancement that is deserved and not just handed out for emotional gratification.

PKC has been fortunate cultivating athletes that consistently qualify and place on a state, regional, and national level of competition  Competition that Is organized and sanctioned by the US Olympic Committe's  National Governing Body For Karate. (Organizations such as USANKF, AAU, USAKF)

All of this I must admit, largely is due to the influence of Pat Byrnes and Bushi Karate Family in Hatfield Pa. His unselfish embracement of our club and that of his senior students are directly responsible for our success's. And so the tradition goes on.

What we learn through training carries over to all aspects of our lives.  The world we inhabit is a very competitive place.  Whether it’s competition at school, or in the job market; the earlier we learn to handle competitive and stressful situations, the better we learn to not feel threatened or unthinkingly react in those situations.  If nurtured properly, the competition and stress encountered in martial arts training and competitive fighting (kumite) can greatly develop the confidence required to succeed in personal and professional endeavors.  PKC students who have remained consistent in their training , accountable for their behavior, and responseble for their own advancement and ability, have moved on to be successful in their personal and professional lives

PKC is not in the “business” of karate, We are a Club.  We are  a 501(c)(3) Non Profit  group.  We request monthly donations to maintain our facility.

And because we are a 501(c)(3) the donations received will be tax deductible as donations by participating members.. We request a minimum donation of $55.00 per month, but not required.

 - Its bigger than me, - Its bigger than you - Check your ego at the Door - put  on your Uniform, and lets get to work!

                                 -  Rob Matthews, Paul Jackson, Todd Doyle, John Irwin
